A Proponent of Lower Taxes and Smaller Government.
Government should be limited by the State and Federal Constitutions, which minimize the role of government in business and personal matters, thereby reducing the cost of government.
“An important duty of the Supreme Courts is to constrain the growth, scope, means and methods of government. Far too often, in my opinion, our highest courts have failed in that duty, being swayed by expediency and false claims of necessity, adopting compromises that cross the bright lines of the simple language of our Constitutions, thus permitting and encouraging inappropriate and unnecessary growth and expansion of government, frequently resulting in a loss of individual rights and liberties, and almost always at a cost to taxpayers.”
An Advocate for Life, Liberty and Property.
Our State and Federal Constitutions define a shield of rights and liberties that defend an individual’s freedoms of action and thought. At its core, our system is based on the right to be left alone, to enjoy the fruits of one’s hard work and labor, and to take responsibility for one’s own decisions. These are core Georgia values. These are core American values. In Matt Wilson, Georgians will have a powerful advocate for their rights and liberties in Georgia’s highest court.
“Our individual rights and liberties are under assault in a way that they haven’t been in over a generation. America’s success rests on 234 years worth of dreams, political, intellectual and economic, and the right of individuals to make those dreams reality. It is a deep and abiding respect for these rights and liberties that I seek to carry into Georgia’s highest court. In me the people of Georgia will have an advocate and ally.”
We Need a Diversity of Experience.
No current member of the Georgia Supreme Court has any recent private practice experience. Two Justices have never represented private clients, but were career government attorneys. All the other members of the Court ceased private practice between 1973 and 1984 to begin careers as judges. Matt Wilson, conversely, has dealt with the changing reality of legal practice for over three decades. Georgians need a variety of experience on the Supreme Court. The government attorneys and long-term jurists are already well represented. It’s time for someone who has worked with Georgians, defending their rights, to take a seat on their behalf.
“I strongly believe that we need diversity of experience in our court system. A system too long isolated at its highest levels from those most directly affected by its decisions can lead to a compounding of errors that can greatly harm not only the system, but also those governed by its decisions and practices.”
